To better understand how child care complications impact employers and employees in the greater Tucson area, our organizations have partnered with the Cradle to Career Partnership of United Way of Tucson and South. Arizona to investigate.

Across all races and earnings, over 59% of responding employees said they missed a full day or shift due to childcare issues.

When asked if cost was a major barrier to child care, 72% of those with an annual income of less than $ 60,000 said it was. Among all respondents, 57% of employees told us that cost is an issue, which includes those who report higher income levels themselves.

Significantly, 66% of respondents indicated that if they had access to affordable, high-quality child care, they would be less distracted at work. And as evidenced by the fact that 84% of survey respondents were women, they are disproportionately affected by child care issues.

Of the employers who responded, 76% said they had been negatively affected by employee childcare issues, with 70% citing a loss in productivity. And 62% of employers are concerned that some employees are leaving the organization because of childcare issues.

According to MAP Dashboard, Tucson ranks ninth out of 12 peer metropolitan statistical areas in the percentage of 3- and 4-year-olds enrolled in kindergarten.
