Press release from Vestas Wind Systems A/S
Aarhus, May 16, 2022

The expansion of renewable energy is expected to accelerate over the next decade, and Vestas will support this growth by improving the scalability of new wind energy solutions and increasing the certainty of the business case for customers. To support the expected growth and increased penetration of renewables into the global power mix, we are introducing the V163-4.5 MW, extending the Vestas 4 MW platform and delivering superior wind farm performance in medium to low wind conditions. .

The V163-4.5MW features an 18% increase in swept area and offers up to 10% higher annual power generation (AEP) at fleet level compared to the V150-4.5MW based on site-specific conditions. With 80.1m blades, the V163-4.5MW has a large rotor size to power ratio, which results in a higher capacity factor and increased power output at medium wind speeds and low when the demand for renewables is high. In addition, the operating temperature is increased by four degrees compared to the V150-4.5 MW. This leads to better predictability and stability in production with the potential to increase the value of energy.

“The V163-4.5 MW improves business case certainty for our customers, and as it is built on one of the most installed wind turbine platforms in the world with a well-established global supply chain established, it enables us to realize the full value of the investments made. by Vestas and our suppliers by extending the life cycle of our technologies. The V163-4.5MW reduces risk for customers, while ensuring that we design for scalability, which is key to our technology ambitions. This marks another step in Vestas’ journey to drive industrialization through renewable energy, and a path to increased profitability for the wind industry.”says Anders Nielsen, Chief Technology Officer of Vestas.

The V163-4.5 MW is globally applicable, although it is particularly relevant for sites in the United States, Latin America, South Africa and parts of southern Europe. Exceptionally high and stable power generation at the farm level, coupled with a well-established global supply network, allows for accelerated construction and wind penetration at sites beyond typical ideal wind conditions.

“The V163-4.5 MW turbine is optimized for medium to low wind speeds, opening up new markets across North America. Built from our proven 4 MW platform, this product uses an established supply chain and existing infrastructure, including transportation and installation. The diverse suitability of the V163-4.5 MW turbine and Vestas’ expertise in site-specific towers will enable us to generate more profitable projects across a broad market sector. We look forward to continuing to bring innovative technologies to the renewable energy industry and partnering with our customers to accelerate the deployment of wind energy in North America.says Laura Beane, president of Vestas North America.

The new variant underlines the scalability and modularization approach applied on Vestas wind turbine platforms, as it shares most of the main functional and physical module designs with the V150-4.2 MW and the V150- 4.5MW. Building on more than a decade of continuous evolution of Vestas’ 4MW platform, the V163-4.5MW boasts the quality, efficiency and scale of a string of global supply established and optimized over the past ten years. From the outset, the V163-4.5MW was designed to minimize the impact of changes to suppliers, transportation methods, tooling and installation processes, as well as maintenance and maintenance standards. exploitation.
