Closures will occur in the coming months if more financial support is not directed to small regional businesses, according to Nationals leader and Murray Plains MP Peter Walsh.
He said without the support, small businesses could not continue to recover and rebuild from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mr Walsh said small Victorian businesses have been doing their best since October last year.
He said as a direct result, retail strips in regional towns – large and small – remained covered in “for rent” signs, and many more had indicated they would struggle to stay open for a while. more than three months.
“Once again New South Wales has shown the way to keep things going – the government has announced a $1 billion+ support package for businesses and staff affected by the recent coronavirus outbreak. ‘Omicron,” Mr. Walsh said.
“This proactive package included payments of up to $5,000 per week, rebates of $3,000 for purchases of rapid antigen tests, additional support for struggling business owners, and new measures to support the healthcare industry. performing arts,” he said.
‘So what do you get if you’re a small regional Victorian business that’s been girdled by more lockdowns and restrictions than anywhere else? Nothing.
“The Victorian government must now match this support package so that small Victorian businesses are not left behind even further.”
Mr Walsh said the Victorian government must also immediately adopt the National Liberals’ plan to get businesses back on track by suspending QR code check-ins, lifting the work-from-home directive and scrapping density limits for hospitality and entertainment venues.
He said small businesses and local jobs could not be left behind at the last hurdle and needed support now.
“For weeks, the state government has ignored our pleas to help small businesses and struggling workers through this incredibly difficult time,” Walsh said.
“NSW has delivered a package of common sense that now needs to be matched by the Victorian government. We cannot afford to wait while our government dithers and then finally realizes it is wrong again and aligns itself with NSW, as it has done all along.
“A National Liberal government of Matthew Guy will support small businesses to recover, rebuild and grow for the future.
